The Power of Words: Blessing Others & Feeling Blessed

St. Patrick’s Day often brings to mind four leaf clovers, lucky charms, and for some—cheerful celebrations with green beer—but at its heart, this holiday is also about something much more meaningful: blessing and goodwill.

As a transformational life coach, I’m constantly reminded of how powerful our words really are. The things we say—or don’t say—can shape confidence, strengthen relationships, and sometimes even change the direction of someone’s life.

Spoken affirmations…
Encouraging words…
Simple, heartfelt blessings…

They may seem small, but they carry more influence than we realize.

The Missed Moments We All Know Too Well

Opportunities to genuinely affirm or bless others pass us by every day.

You notice someone who looks especially nice—but you keep walking.
You see a colleague do a great job—but you assume someone else will acknowledge it.
You appreciate a friend’s effort—but you don’t quite say it out loud.

And most of us know exactly how it feels to have our efforts overlooked.

You go the extra mile.
You show up when it matters.
You do your best.

And when no one notices, it can quietly take the wind out of your sails.

But then—someone does notice.

“Wow, you really handled that well.”
“I just want you to know how much I appreciate you.”
“You made a difference today.”

Suddenly, something shifts.

We feel seen.
We feel valued.
We feel encouraged to keep going.

Positive affirmations don’t just make people feel good—they empower us to take healthy risks, to stretch beyond our comfort zones, and to step more fully into who we’re capable of being.

Affirming Others Takes Intention

For many of us, speaking affirming words doesn’t come automatically. In fact, it can feel easier to hold onto judgments, critiques, or silent expectations—especially when life feels busy or stressful.

But when we intentionally shift our focus—when we choose to notice what’s right in others instead of what’s lacking—we create space for connection, trust, and growth.

When someone realizes that another person believes in them…
That they are seen, trusted, and valued…

It can make a profound difference.

St. Patrick’s Day: A Beautiful Invitation

St. Patrick’s Day gives us a gentle invitation to return to this practice of blessing—both giving and receiving it.

There’s a traditional Irish blessing that captures this spirit so beautifully:

“May your mornings bring joy and your evenings bring peace.
May your troubles grow few as your blessings increase.”

What if we didn’t just read those words—but lived them?

What if we became the kind of people who spoke blessing into everyday moments?

Simple Ways to Practice Blessing Today

Here are a few easy, actionable ways to practice blessing—today and beyond:

  • Say the kind thought out loud instead of assuming it’s obvious
  • Acknowledge effort, not just outcomes
  • Encourage someone who’s trying, even if they’re still figuring it out
  • Offer appreciation freely, without waiting for the “perfect” moment
  • Bless yourself, too—notice what you’re doing well and honor your growth

These small moments of affirmation ripple outward more than we ever see.

A Blessing for You

In the spirit of this day, I want you to know—you are appreciated.

Your presence matters.
Your effort counts.
Your kindness makes a difference.

It has been a blessing to both serve you and be served by you, and I am grateful for the ways you show up in the world.

May your mornings bring joy and your evenings bring peace.
May your troubles grow few as your blessings increase.

Wishing you a very happy—and meaningful—St. Patrick’s Day 🍀
